it's tough to say what their plan is. in a way it looks like more of the old Harry way of keeping costs low at the expense of winning. they had a good year last season and are selling tickets. and now it looks like they are dumping salary to cash in.

Maybe they have to keep costs low in anticipation of the downturn in the economy.

Kessel said he wanted out out of Boston. Kobasew wasn't doing much. Thy had tallent down in the AHL, why not play them? I think the team looks better when Savard & Looch are back in the line up.

Kessel wasn't going to come back, he and Julien had differing ideas with what to do with your down-time. Everyone else is expected to match last year, if they overachieved they're in for a long season

That Kessel deal looks like it'll land you Taylor Hall - nothing to sneeze at. And if Kessel had signed, you'd have been over the cap and would have had to ditch someone else.
Kobasew move is curious though. Basically a roundabout way to ditch Kobasew and pick up Paille - don't understand that logic.

Hope everyone is doing good these days...its been a while since my last post...so I thought I'd chime in on this one...
Kessel has no interest in re-signing with Boston - a trade was inevitable. But, there are a few good reasons the Bruins win this deal already: 1) Toronto signed Kessel to over $5mil per season. He had to be benched in the playoffs to raise his level of play. Try to coast under the pressure of playing in Toronto and they will eat him alive. The Leafs are now stuck with his salary against a shrinking cap for that money for the next five years; 2) Toronto gave up higher picks than they would have lost by simply signing him to an offer sheet; 3) Taylor Hall...Toronto has yet to win a game this season. They suck this year and don't have a first-rounder for the next two seasons...think the pressure was high on Kessel already? He has to be the savior when he starts playing this month.
Moving Kobasew solves a couple of things...it clears $2mil off the cap (difference between his salary and Paille's), Bruins had zero wiggle room. And it sends a message to the remaining players who had yet to put together a solid effort this season.
Now they are absolutely stacked in regards to draft picks - valuable commodites since they cost very little against the cap in regards to entry-level contracts. And, they are valuable to fill missing pieces near the trade deadline.
